Adaoma Nnabeze (BIOGRAPHY)

BIOGRAPHY

Adaoma Nnabeze is a Nigerian artist whose creative foundation was shaped by an artistic upbringing and early immersion in a family of makers. Her formal training at the Nsukka Art School—renowned for its legacy of innovation and cultural scholarship—provided a pivotal space for experimentation and growth. There, she studied under respected artists such as Ozioma Onuzulike, Chijioke Onuora, and Eva Obodo, within a lineage that includes celebrated figures like Uche Okeke, Chike Aniakor, and El Anatsui.

Adaoma’s work is an exploration of spirituality, tradition, and contemporary innovation. Her practice is grounded in a deep sensitivity to nature and a willingness to push material boundaries. Working primarily with coloured thread and fiber, she constructs layered, organic compositions that reflect human connection, emotion, and fate. Her tactile use of thread is not only material but metaphor—representing the intricate, interwoven nature of thought, memory, and experience.

Her works have earned critical recognition, including an honorary award at the Anton Chekhov Russian International Art Contest, a prize in the Chevron Art Competition, and commendation in the Spanish Art and Culture Competition.

At the heart of her practice is a pursuit of harmony—an offering of hope, positivity, and reflection. Through each stitch and strand, Adaoma channels a longing for balance, virtue, and the quiet resilience of the human spirit.

STATEMENT

In the intricate tapestry of life, Adaoma Nnabeze believes that individuals shape their destinies through every thought, word, and action. What once felt abstract has become a guiding conviction—an understanding that invisible threads connect our inner lives not only to ourselves but also to the people and experiences that shape our journey. With a deep reverence for nature and a belief in the power of positive connection, Adaoma brings these values into her life and artistic practice.

Thread is her chosen medium—both symbol and substance. It reflects the interconnectedness of thought and action, the quiet unfolding of cause and effect, the karmic cycles we inhabit. To Adaoma, each thread represents a tether between the self and the world—delicate yet strong, linear yet infinitely entwined. Nature mirrors these patterns: the spider’s web, the umbilical cord, the root systems beneath the earth’s surface—all revealing nature’s blueprint for connection, resilience, and life.

Adaoma draws a parallel between planting a seed and nurturing a thought—both begin singular, but through care and intention, they multiply and yield fruit. Her art reminds us that our inner worlds are not isolated. Every action resonates outward, woven into the fabric of collective humanity.

Her use of shoemaking thread, prized for its tensile strength, further underscores her focus on enduring bonds. These threads, designed to mend and protect what carries us forward—our feet—become metaphors for the invisible ties that support and sustain us through life.

Through her work, Adaoma Nnabeze affirms the transformative power of conscious living. Each present moment holds the potential to shift our fate, to sow the seeds of something more connected, balanced, and meaningful. In her world, every thread counts—a call to mindfulness, intention, and the quiet beauty of deliberate connection.
