Aimufia Osagie (BIOGRAPHY)
Artist Statement
I am a multimedia artist who enjoys experimenting with a wide range of methods and materials, including palette knife, impasto, brushstrokes, oils, acrylics, charcoal, pastels, watercolours, and printing inks. I also use sawdust on canvas to create a tactile surface that binds my oil and acrylic pigments together, enhancing texture and prolonging the painting’s longevity.
My work explores themes such as family ties, market scenes, river scenes, floral designs, everyday life, and occasional abstract compositions. My mind is constantly active, and I approach each piece differently—variety is the spice of life.
Biography
Born on March 14, 1969, in Benin City, Osagie Rafael Aimufia began creating art at a very young age, reproducing and drawing images from newspapers, comic magazines, and record album covers. He went on to study at the renowned Federal Polytechnic, Auchi, Edo State, where he earned a distinction from the School of Art and Design in the class of 1993.
Following his graduation, Aimufia completed his mandatory one-year National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) program at Kano State College of Education, Kumbotso, where he taught Fine Art. In 2015, seeking to broaden his artistic knowledge, he travelled to the United States to participate in a residency at the Vermont Studio Center, the largest artist residency program in the country—a transformative experience that deepened his creative perspective.
Aimufia has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Nigeria and abroad, and his works are held in both private and public collections worldwide. He is a member of the Guild of Professional Fine Artists of Nigeria (GFA), the Catholic Men Organisation of Nigeria (CMO), and an alumnus of the Vermont Studio Center, USA.
