Akintomide Aluko (BIOGRAPHY)

Artist Statement
My work as an artist engages with themes of the past and present, societal issues, and mental health. It is largely representational and figurative, though it may take various forms through research and exploration. There is always a narrative element—something that gives each work direction and meaning.

In recent times, my subject matter has centered on femininity, documenting traits such as grace, nurturance, expressiveness, strength, and fragility.

Biography
Akintomide Aluko (b. 1988) is a visual artist with a background in photography and film. He holds a B.Tech in Fine and Applied Arts (2011) from Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Oyo State, Nigeria. In 2016, he obtained a diploma in Filmmaking with a major in Cinematography, which included a one-year internship with a now-defunct media outfit in Nigeria.

Akintomide’s artistic talent developed in childhood through a passion for recreating cartoon characters and comics for leisure. Although art was not the career he initially envisioned, he often describes it as a calling—one that has defined his path and purpose.

He has been practicing as a full-time studio artist in Lagos, Nigeria, and has participated in several group exhibitions and art-based programs. His exhibitions include Next of Kin (Lagos, 2018), Rand Merchant Bank (2018), Collective Renditions (2019), and Future Masters (2020). He is currently developing a new body of work from his home studio in Lagos, with plans for a debut solo exhibition while exploring further opportunities to advance his practice.
