Chinaza Nkemka (BIOGRAPHY)
ARTIST BIOGRAPHY
Chinaza Nkemka (b. 1999) is a Lagos-based modernist visual artist from Imo State, Nigeria. A self-taught painter, she has developed a distinctive artistic voice through her innovative use of mixed media, with acrylic serving as her primary medium. Her work reflects a process of organic evolution, shaped by personal exploration and informal mentorship from close friends and fellow artists whose feedback continues to enrich her practice.
Chinaza’s art navigates deeply personal themes while resonating with broader, universal human experiences. Her ability to evoke emotion and introspection has led to recognition both locally and internationally. She has participated in exhibitions such as Shout Plenty (African Artists' Foundation), On the Fringe (AG18), and iDesign/+234 (SOTO Gallery), among others. Her work has also attracted notable commissions, including The Evil Genius by Mr. Eazi and collaborations with Spotify Africa.
Driven by curiosity and experimentation, Chinaza remains committed to refining her practice through the continuous exploration of new techniques and materials. For her, art is both a personal and collective journey of discovery—an invitation to see, feel, and connect.
ARTIST STATEMENT
In my creative process, I treat each work as a living entity—shifting, breathing, and evolving with every gaze. I’m driven by a desire to capture the spontaneity and randomness of life, which leads me to experiment with materials and methods that allow form to emerge organically.
At its core, my work is an exploration of being—of existing fully in the present moment. I aim to create pieces that spark reflection, evoke joy, and open space for deeper contemplation. I’m particularly interested in how art can mirror our personal narratives and challenge our perceptions of what it means to be present in a world that is often chaotic, absurd, and beautiful.
Themes of intimacy, self-actualization, vulnerability, the mundane, and absurdism recur throughout my practice. Through mixed media, I hope to draw attention to life’s overlooked moments—the ones that provoke both discomfort and delight. I believe that through honest expression, art can offer clarity, disrupt assumptions, and bring us closer to understanding ourselves and each other.
