Fidelis Odogwu (BIOGRAPHY)
Fidelis Odogwu was born in 1970 in Edo State. He studied sculpture at Auchi Polytechnic, where he graduated in 1991, establishing a strong technical foundation for his practice. Over the years, he has developed a distinctive sculptural language that blends calm academic realism with the expressive, geometric qualities found in classical African sculpture. His works often feature clean, minimalist shapes, strong diagonal lines, and architectonic forms that create a clear interplay between balance, movement, and spatial tension.
Odogwu’s approach reflects a deep engagement with African symbolism, folklore, and contemporary social themes. His sculptures draw on both traditional visual vocabularies and modernist design principles, resulting in works that feel rooted in heritage while speaking to present-day realities.
In his recent work, Odogwu has begun experimenting with pieces that merge sculptural and painterly techniques. These mixed-media explorations consider issues of coexistence, family structure, hierarchy, and the shifting values within society, especially in light of growing social tensions and insecurity in Nigeria. Through these compositions, he uses form and texture to comment on resilience, unity, and the need for collective responsibility.
Odogwu has participated in numerous group exhibitions both in Nigeria and internationally. His works are included in significant private and public collections, confirming his place within Nigeria’s contemporary art landscape.
