George Edozie (BIOGRAPHY)
Multidisciplinary artist George Edozie was born in 1972 in Enugu State, Nigeria. His artistic talents emerged during his early childhood in Nsukka, where he created paintings, sketches, and crafts. He graduated with a Bachelor’s Honours degree in Fine and Applied Arts from the University of Benin in 1996 and has since pursued a full-time career as an artist.
Edozie’s impressionist paintings feature angular characters and rich textures that form the essence of his visual language. His works explore socio-cultural, political, and economic themes, evoking emotions of love, belonging, strife, and joy. As an experimentalist, he engages various media—including fabric and found materials—to create installation pieces.
Edozie is also a curator and art restoration expert, having restored and conserved works for major galleries and collections, including SMO Contemporary Art, Alexis Galleries, Arthouse Contemporary, and the Chimedie Museum. His restoration projects have included works by Ben Enwonwu, Uche Okeke, Gani Odutokun, Ablade Glover, and other notable artists.
He has exhibited widely in Nigeria, the United States, and France, with shows such as New Nigerian Conjunctures: The Art of George Edozie (National Museum, Lagos, 2018), Back to Black Art Africa (Art Basel Miami, 2017), Afro Love (Alexis Gallery, Lagos, 2015), and African Way of Art (La Galerie Vendôme). His works are held in prominent public and private collections, including the Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami, the Indianapolis Museum, the Studio Museum Harlem, the Pan-Atlantic University Museum, Lagos, and the Chimedie Museum.
