Gerry Nnubia (BIOGRAPHY)

ARTIST BIOGRAPHY

Born in Enugu, Nigeria, in 1966, Gerry Nnubia graduated from the Institute of Management and Technology, Enugu (HND), and briefly taught at Auchi Polytechnic, Edo State, between 1988 and 1989. A restless experimentalist, Nnubia is renowned for his unrelenting pursuit of new styles, materials, and techniques in art.

He is a strong advocate of art as a dynamic vocation rooted in freedom of self-expression and open to global perspectives. His experimental approach to materials often makes him appear almost like a scientist in an art laboratory. From the onset, his works have transcended classical boundaries, delving into deeper expressions of thought and emotion on canvas.

Nnubia has exhibited extensively in Nigeria and internationally. His works are held in both private and public collections, including those of Total, Access Bank, and the Daniels African Arts Collection in Texas. His pieces have also been on loan to the esteemed DuSable Museum of African American History in Chicago, USA.

ARTIST STATEMENT

Environment and humanity occupy my thoughts both in casual conversation and on canvas. In 2020, during the COVID-19 lockdown, life came to a standstill, and while spending time at Elvira’s Garden consuming canned drinks, the aluminium waste began to pile up. This inspired me, as an experimentalist, to transform the heap of discarded cans into art—giving birth to a highly ingenious style I call the Eden Series.
